Notice the histogram in the Properties window only shows the Brighter Highlights and Whites. There’s no data darker than the midpoint. This is because the histogram reflects the effect of the Luminosity Mask.

Now we can set the blending mode of the new Curves layer to Multiply. This will darken the areas of the image exposed by the Layer Mask that was added. You can also adjust the image by changing the curve. An example of a darkening adjustment is shown in the screen shot below.
